Prayatna Nepal is a self-help organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls with visual impairments. It was founded by a diverse group of women, both with and without visual impairments. Five of the seven board members,71% have visual impairments, including the chairperson. By including women with and without disabilities, the organization aims to leverage everyone's unique perspectives to enhance the social, cultural, economic, environmental, and political conditions for women with visual impairments.

The first day of the training began with Ms. Sarita Lamichhane (Chairperson of Prayatna Nepal) welcoming all the participants and sharing the objectives of the training. Then a short introduction took place before going into the session which included the expectations of the participants. Participants were assigned roles as timekeepers, entertainers, and reporters. After the introduction round, Ms. Lamichhane, started the training by asking the participants to fill the pre-test questions. After which Prayatna Nepal’s introductory video was played then Ms. Lamichanne shared the ground rules of the training to the participants. Then, the session continued with group work on the concept of disability by forming a group according to the table and were handed over information on types /modality of disability. The participants discussed the information in a group and voted for their preferred one. These voting options in the ballot paper were presented as political parties which in fact reflected upon the types of disability. They got engaged in a conversation about Nepal's current position along this spectrum, which most agreed is somewhere between the Medical Model and Social Models for Disability.

Moreover, to provide further knowledge to the participants about disability, a video was played which consisted of types of disability based on severity and functional limitations. Ms. Lamichhane then focused on accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities. She also cleared some confusions among participants on terminologies used to address persons with disabilities. She encouraged participants to learn and use respectful terms and language to address persons with disabilities while providing health related services and information. During which there was a visit from Mr. Bharat Poudel, Officer of Pokhara Metropolitan City for evaluation along with him Mr. Arjun Neupane, Officer of Social Welfare Division, Pokhara Metropolitan City joined the evaluation. He gave a short remark showing gratitude to Prayatna Nepal for conducting such an insightful training and requested the participants to implement the learnings effectively in their daily life both personally and professionally. Then, Ms. Lamichhane continued with the session and requested the health workers consider individual human rights while providing services to persons with severe disabilities. Then a group work took place where the participants were given case stories and asked to present myths, misconceptions and potential solutions to address the problem associated with disabilities. She also encouraged the participants to provide proper counselling to the family members of persons with disabilities in their respective health institutions. Then the participants had a session outside the hall regarding the practice of accessible health services to persons with disabilities and sensitized them through the practical session. The day ended with the reflection from participants.

The second day began with the reporter recapping the learnings from the previous day. Then Mr. Shrikanta Sapkota facilitated the session on the legal provision of disability. He discussed the Laws and Acts formulated and implemented for the persons with disabilities along with SRHR services. Then, Mr. Arjun Bahadur Kshetri (Representative from Health Division of Pokhara Metropolitan City) facilitated a session on efforts of providing health services to persons with disabilities on behalf of Pokhara Metropolitan City. Furthermore, Ms. Lamichhane requested the participants to develop an action plan in accordance to their learning, reflection and commitment from the two-day training that would map their future plan on facilitating an accessible and inclusive approach towards service delivery. Then a session took place regarding the accessibility audit of the health institution where it was found that most of the health institutions were not accessible as the buildings were constructed long ago. However, the newly constructed buildings are accessible. Then, a post test was done and the results were published, which clearly signified that the participants were aware of the issues related to persons with disabilities after the training.

The training concluded with Ms. Lamichhane thanking all the participants for making the training successful.

“I used to talk to the supporter rather than the persons with disabilities regarding their health issues, but this training has made me realize that I should talk to the patient rather than their company. I ensure that I will always deal with patients from now on.” – One of the participants

“I got aware that reproductive right of a female is solely dependent on her rather than her family members. So, now I’ll make sure that the right is exercised.” – One of the participants

“As the health institution I am working on is not accessible to persons with disabilities, I will discuss it with my team and work for the accessibility.” – One of the participants
