Training on Assistive Technology

Prayatna Nepal is a self-help organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls with visual impairments. It was founded by a diverse group of women, both with and without visual impairments. Five of the seven board members,71% have visual impairments, including the chairperson. By including women with and without disabilities, the organization aims to leverage everyone's unique perspectives to enhance the social, cultural, economic, environmental, and political conditions for women with visual impairments.

The first day of the training began with Ms. Jalasa Sapkota (General member of Prayatna Nepal) welcoming all the participants and sharing the objectives of the training. Then a short introduction took place before getting into the session. Then, participants were assigned roles as timekeeper, entertainer, and reporter. After the introduction round, Mr. Khom Raj Sharma, facilitator, started the training with his expertise, addressing the simplest confusion. He started the training by explaining digital accessibility, its importance and applications. After a short tea break, the training continued with accessible features of technology. TalkBack for Android was introduced to the participants as all of them had android phones. Along with which participants were introduced to voice commands through Google Assistant and learned about accessibility shortcuts for device navigation. After the lunch break, the training continued with energizer and then the Q&A session on Accessibility Features took place. Then, the participants were introduced to navigation and mobility tools which included using google maps and ride-sharing applications. Mr. Suyog Dhungel, the Assistant Facilitator, provided practical demonstrations of navigation and mobility tools, including Google Maps and ride-sharing applications. The day concluded with the designated reporter summarizing the day's learnings, reflecting the participants' enthusiasm and successful clarification of common misconceptions.

The second day of the training started with Mr. Sharma revising the previous day’s theory lessons followed by hands-on practice with navigation tools before a short tea break. The practical session then continued with exploring assistive applications such as InstaReader, Seeing AI, Be My Eyes. The afternoon session started with Q&A session. Later, peer learning was done proving it particularly effective as participants felt comfortable sharing queries among themselves. The day was conspicuously enhanced by a visit from representatives of the Canada Fund for Local Initiative (CFLI), during which selected participants shared their learning experiences, demonstrating the program's immediate impact.

The third day of the training started with the recap of the previous day.  Mr. Sharma guided the participants to use mobile application called Cash Reader that is used to identify money and digital wallets. The participants were given practical orientation to use this application, for which the facilitators guided them. Furthermore, essential communication and social media tools, including WhatsApp, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet were covered with practical demonstrations by the assistant facilitator. Participants received training in productivity tools such as Gmail and Outlook, completing practical exercises that included sending virtual meeting links to fellow participants and the Prayatna Nepal team. The session also covered advanced features of Google Assistant for internet browsing via smartphones.

The final day of the training began with the recap of the previous day. Then, Ms. Sarita Lamichhane, Chairperson of Prayatna Nepal took over the session on understanding of digital security on both online spaces as well as offline spaces. Through an interactive approach, participants shared experiences related to digital violence and received practical solutions to enhance their security. The session included practical exercises on password security assessment and implementation of two-factor authentication. Participants received braille scripts detailing complaint mechanisms regarding digital security recently published by Prayatna Nepal. Mr. Sharma and the assistant facilitators provided comprehensive revision sessions and addressed the remaining questions. The training concluded with Ms. Lamichhane expressing gratitude to the facilitation team and gathering participant feedback and providing them assistive device.
